Silicon dioxide is a synthetic product in the form of gel beads that absorb moisture, yet remain dry. It is available in sachet packets as well as loose, and is used as a desiccant (prevents moisture damage). It is important to be aware of potential health hazards related to silica gel.

    Ingestion

    • Fisher Scientific indicates that ingestion of silica gel can irritate your digestive tract. Prompt medical treatment is necessary.

    Contact

    • The dust can cause irritation to your skin and eyes. Fisher Scientific recommends flushing your eyes for 15 minutes with water and seeking medical treatment. Flush your skin for 15 minutes with soap and water and seek treatment if the irritation persists.

    Handling

    • To prevent health risks, protective glasses, appropriate clothing and gloves should be worn when handling silica gel, according to Fisher Scientific. Use in a well-ventilated area.

    Storage

    • Silica gel should be stored in an airtight container and placed in a dry location.
