The Safety of 5-Formyl Salicylic Acid

The chemical powder 5-formylsalicylic acid can release carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide during its decomposition process. Safe usage and proper storage of the material are important. 5-formylsalicylic acid is not classified as a carcinogen or as a hazardous material.

  1. Handling and Storage

    • Wear protective eyewear and gloves when handling 5-formylsalcyic acid. Keep the work area well-ventilated and with little dust. Store in a closed container in a cool and well-ventilated area.

    Eye Exposure

    • For eye exposure, flush eyes with water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Lift eyelids occasionally to aid the flush.

    Skin Exposure

    • Skin exposure also requires a 15-minute flush of the exposed area. Remove any contaminated clothing or accessories. Wash the items before wearing again. If eye or skin exposure results in lasting irritation, seek medical assistance.

    Ingestion

    • Seek medical assistance immediately if ingested. Ingestion victims that remain conscious should be given two to four cups of water or milk. Do not give an unconscious person liquid.

    Inhalation

    • Counteract mild inhalation exposure with fresh air. Continued breathing problems may require oxygen treatment. Cessation of breathing may require artificial respiration. Seek medical assistance for anything worse than mild inhalation exposure.

    Spills

    • Maintain personal protection while cleaning spills. Sweep or absorb the spill and place absorbent materials in a closed disposal container.
