Helium Tank Care
Anyone who has wanted balloons at a party or event knows that the best way to inflate a large quantity of balloons quickly is with a helium tank. However, the care and handling of these tanks is more involved than one might think.-
Handling
-
Only hardware that is designed for the specific cylinder should be used. The cylinder should not be banged, dropped, slid, rolled on its sides or lifted by its cap.
Storage
-
Helium tanks should be stored upright in a designated area while being secured by chains or cables. The area should be dry, well ventilated, away from exits and stairways, and in a cool location no warmer than 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
Inspection
-
Insure none of the hoses, valves or other equipment is damaged or worn. If the tank itself shows signs of damage or leaking, place it in an isolated, safe place and contact the supplier for safe removal.
Transportation
-
Helium tanks should be handled by professionals and moved with a hand cart. When transporting a helium tank by vehicle, ensure the vehicle is properly equipped for transporting cylinders of compressed gas.
Safe Use
-
Never inhale helium, as it can cause serious injury or death. Keep the cylinder away from open flames, sparks and electricity. Don't puncture it, do not remove the cap and close the valve securely when the tank is not in use.
