The Effects of Music on Safety in the Work Place
-
Morale
-
Studies, like the one cited in the Reference section below, have shown that music can affect our mood strongly. Most people have experienced this first-hand for themselves as they choose to listen to certain music depending upon their mood. Uplifting music can make us feel more positive about life and work. If our morale is good, than we tend to be more careful and alert at work, which increases safety.
Productivity
-
Field hands and railroad track layers have known for generations that singing helps to increase productivity. It can keep people awake during arduous tasks and moving in time to the music keeps the rate of production steady.
Muzak
-
The Muzak Company formed in the 1950s specifically to provide workplaces with music developed to increase worker morale, productivity and alertness.
Critical Tasks
-
Certain types of music (songs with lyrics, for example) are distracting if played while trying to perform mental tasks like calculations. This is why most industrial music is instrumental only.
Distractions
-
Not everyone likes the same type of music. Workers allowed to select their own type of music to play, therefore, should wear headphones, otherwise it could very well be distracting to co-workers and lower their morale and productivity.
