Skid Steer Loader Safety

The compact size and versatility of skid steer loaders make them a common tool on construction sites, landscaping jobs and farms. However, failing to follow certain basic safety rules when operating a loader can lead to serious injury or death.
  1. Safety Devices

    • The operator must always wear a seat belt and use an interlock control, such as a restraint bar, if the skid steer loader has one. Many loaders will not operate unless the interlock device or seat belt is secured.

    Entering and Exiting

    • Enter the skid steer loader only when the bucket or other attachment is resting on the ground, or when lift-arm supports are in place. Don't use foot or hand controls to aid in entering or exiting the loader. Never exit the loader unless the bucket has been lowered to the ground, the parking brake set and the engine turned off.

    Operation

    • Never overload the machine, as uneven distribution of weight may cause it to tip over. Be aware of your surroundings and keep all parts of your body inside the cab while the loader is running.

    Maintenance

    • Keep the foot pedals on the skid steer loader clear of all types of debris, such as dirt and ice. Don't modify the operator's cabin or remove the exterior screens.

    Repair Safety

    • Never work on the loader while the engine is running. Always service the loader while the bucket is on the ground. If this is not possible, have lift-arm supports in place.
