Safely Operating Forklifts in Toronto
-
1
Find an accredited training school.
There are many companies in Toronto that provide training on how to safely operate a forklift. These training centers may also provide other workplace safety certification courses.
-
2
Consider what training is appropriate.
There are many different types of forklifts and many ways to use them. A forklift used in a warehouse to move pallets is quite different from ones modified to pick up barrels or drums of chemicals. Training centers also provide specific courses for certain industries, such as hospitals, hotels and building supply stores.
-
3
Take the classroom part of the course.
This part of the operator course covers the legislation that applies to forklift operators in Toronto, as well as the rules and penalties for misuse.
The classroom section also helps operators understand how the forklift's center of gravity affects its handling and reviews emergency procedures in the event of an accident.
-
4
Take the practical course.
Most training centers will travel to your workplace and train you on the equipment you will be using. This is highly recommended, as the course instructor can tailor your learning to your workplace needs.
If this is not possible, or if you do not have a job with a company that maintains a forklift, most training centers can provide you with access to a forklift for this portion of the course.
-
5
Become certified.
Once the classroom and practical sections have been mastered, the training center will provide you with a certificate that confirms you have passed a course that satisfies the Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements.
