Scaffold Safety
Scaffolds provide a safe and cost-effective method of gaining access to overhead work areas, and are much easier and safer than using ladders. Accidents from using scaffolds improperly result in several injuries and deaths every year which can be minimized by following a few basic guidelines.-
Inspection
-
Scaffolds must be designed and regularly inspected by qualified personnel. Weld cracks, broken or missing boards, damaged guardrails, uprights, walkways and ladders must be checked before each use.
Erection
-
Scaffolds must be erected according to the manufacturer's specifications by qualified personnel. Deviating from specified construction methods could result in scaffold collapse and serious injury to employees.
Weather
-
OSHA prohibits personnel from working on scaffolds during electrical storms or other inclement weather events. All snow and ice must be removed from all scaffolding platforms, ladders and railing prior to use.
Power Lines
-
Scaffolds must not be constructed or used in close proximity to electrical power lines or other electrical sources unless the electrical sources have been deactivated and properly locked out and tagged out.
Other Hazards
-
Materials being hoisted to and from scaffolds must have an attended tag line connected to the materials. Overhead protection must be provided for workers exposed to hazards of falling objects.
