Wire Rope Handling Safety
-
Definition
-
A wire rope is simply a rope made out of braided, twisted wires.
Burrs
-
If a strand on a wire rope breaks, it will begin to uncurl and stick out as a burr. This can cause damage to the hands when the rope is handled, in addition to compromising the integrity of the rope if it unravels.
Slings
-
Wire ropes can be exceptionally heavy, and carrying them by hand can lead to strain in the muscles. Slings should be used to lift wire ropes any great distance.
Lubrication
-
The lubrication on wire ropes can be dangerous for those handling them. Reactions aside, it can lead to an unsafe grip, which could lead to injury when the cable is dropped or a worker's hand slips.
Safety Procedures
-
When handling wire rope it's best to wear safety equipment such as thick work gloves. Procedures such as examining all wire rope before handling is also a good idea.
