What Is Physical Exhaustion?

Physical exhaustion is a common ailment that occurs among individuals who work for prolonged periods or who suffer from sleep deprivation. While exhaustion is a common ailment, extreme exhaustion can be dangerous.
  1. Fatigue

    • Fatigue is a tiredness and weariness that can be experienced by individuals who use a particular part of their body too often. For instance, an individual running for a long period of time can develop fatigue in his legs. A lack of sleep can also cause fatigue.

    Stress Exhaustion

    • Stress exhaustion, also called burnout, can be caused by repetitive tasks, overwork or anxiety over the possibility of losing one's job. Relaxation techniques and time off from work can help alleviate stress exhaustion.

    Heat Exhaustion

    • Heat exhaustion is caused by overexposure to high temperatures and dehydration. Those suffering from heat exhaustion should do whatever possible to remain cool. Heat exhaustion is a medical emergency if the sufferer faints or has a seizure.

    • Exhaustion can have very serious consequences, including cardiac death.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Exhaustion caused by normal reasons is treated through rest and sleep. Some individuals also self-medicate with stimulants such as caffeine. Medically-based exhaustion can be treated using medicines for the underlying cause.
