How to Clean Safety Glasses

Safety glasses are "protective eyewear that meet the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)", according to the Wishard web site (see resources). The frames and lenses in safety glasses are sturdier than normal "street" glasses. They are resistant to heat as well. To keep the lenses on safety glasses from becoming scratched, they must be cleaned properly. Scratches can impair your vision and weaken the lenses as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Blow any loose dirt off the lenses of the safety glasses with your breath. Removing loose particles lessens the chance of scratching the lenses.

    • 2

Clean safety glasses by using the spray and disposable cloths provided at a glasses cleaning station, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (see reference). You'll find these stations hung on the walls throughout factories and other places that require that safety glasses be worn.

    • 3

Use alcohol wipes to clean safety glasses if a glasses cleaning station isn't available, the Utah State Office of Education recommends. Wipe off both sides of the lenses first. Then, clean the temples and the rest of the frames.

    • 4

Wipe the safety glasses clean with a soft cloth to remove any residue or streaks that may be left over. A soft cloth won't scratch or otherwise mar safety glasses.
