Safe Use of Compressed Gas Cylinders

Gas cylinders are used to transport and store pressurized gases. The improper use of compressed gas cylinders can result in serious injury and, in some cases, death. Anyone involved with the manufacture or repair of gas cylinders should know how to safely use and transport them. Also, anyone who owns, fills or uses gas cylinders while on the job should be aware of the potential danger that could come about as a result of their mishandling.
  1. Training

    • The Compressed Gas Association (CGA) has created the technical specifications, safety standards and training and educational materials used in the industrial gas industry since 1913. New employees and anyone else involved in the handling of gas cylinders should complete training mandated by the CGA to obtain the skills needed to safely do their job. It is important that they are aware of the risks that go along with the use of compressed gas cylinders. This training will allow users to do visual inspections on the gas cylinder and its attachments to determine if there is any damage. Dents, bulges and scorch marks are examples of visual indicators of damage. If damage is detected in a gas cylinder, it will not be cleared for use. Users also will be trained to perform visual inspections to verify that cylinders were manufactured to the standards and specifications of CGA legislation.

    Usage Guidelines

    • Individuals who handle gas cylinders should wear safety shoes and other personal protective equipment (PPE) when required. Compressed gas cylinders should not be used for anything other than the transportation and storage of gas. Gas cylinders should not be dropped, rolled or dragged. Gas cylinders should be used in a vertical or upright position unless otherwise specified. Compressed gas cylinders also should be securely restrained to prevent them from falling or tipping over. Double-check to ensure you have the correct gas cylinder before using it. Before connecting the gas cylinder to equipment, make sure the regulator and pipe work are appropriate for the type of gas and pressure being used. Cylinder valves should be closed and dust caps need to be closed when compressed gas cylinders are not in use.
