Safety for a Reach Forklift
-
Driving a forklift
-
A forklift drives differently than a car. The rear wheels steer a forklift, whereas the front wheels of a car do the steering. It is more difficult to stop a forklift quickly or swerve and maintain control.
Tipping
-
The load on a forklift must be kept on the uphill side when driving on an incline. Otherwise, the steering wheels may not have enough weight on them and the forklift may tip. The reach mechanism should not be extended while driving.
Driving in Reverse
-
Sometimes it is necessary to drive in reverse, since the load may obstruct your vision. Take extra precaution when driving in reverse.
Safety Restraints
-
Forklifts are required to have driver-restraint systems. Many injuries or deaths occur when a driver tries to jump from a forklift that is tipping. It is much safer to remain in the safety harness then attempt to jump from the forklift.
Maintenance
-
Inspect the forklift frequently to make sure that it is in working order. All safety features should be operational.
