Workplace Lifting Safety

Exercising workplace safety when it comes to lifting objects can be very important. When someone lifts an object incorrectly, it can cause problems for the employee along with his employer.
  1. Proper Procedures

    • Make sure your feet are shoulder width apart before you lift something. This procedure enables you to remain steady and not tip over or fall. Having a solid base keeps you steady.

    Squat Procedure

    • It's a good idea to keep your stomach muscles tight when you are about to lift a heavy object. This will reduce the strain on the spine. Slightly bend your knees, then squat into a lifting position. Keep your back straight.

    Gripping

    • Grip the object with both hands and make sure you have a secure, stable grip before you start to lift the object. If the object is a box, you may have to tip the box to one side and slip your hand under the box, then tip the box to the other side, which allows you to place the other hand under the box.

    Standing

    • The object should be positioned close to your body, which helps you keep it steady. Propel yourself upward, to a standing position, using your legs. This should be a smooth transition to a standing position.

    Straight Back

    • Always keep your back straight throughout the entire procedure. Avoid the tendency to bend your back, even if you think an object is not heavy.
