How to Conduct an Industrial Safety Meeting

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides voluntary training to those wishing to conduct classes for safety certification of workers. The program has increased the number of safety certifications by 2.3 million from 2004 to 2008, promoting health and safety in the workplace since 1971. Though trainer authorization is voluntary, some states, such as Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Missouri and New York, mandate worker certification for certain publicly funded projects.

Authorized trainers are prepared to conduct 30-hour classes or 10-hour classes, which comprise 80 percent of the outreach program, and receive certification cards to distribute to students upon completion of the program.

  Complete Course #501, Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry, offered at OSHA Training Institute Education Centers (OTIECs) or the OSHA Training Institute.

  Receive student completion cards provided by OSHA.

• 3

  Provide worker safety information and industry hazard recognition and prevention methods for at least one hour per class meeting.

• 4

  Complete 10 hours of student training for 10-hour safety certification or 30 hours of student training for 30-hour safety certification.

• 5

  Issue student safety certification cards.

• 6

  Retain individual training class records for five years.
