What Is Cystoid Macular Edema?

Cystoid macular edema (CME) is a condition that causes swelling in the macula, the central part of the retina. The macula is responsible for central vision, so CME can lead to blurred vision, decreased visual acuity, and other vision problems.

CME is often associated with other eye conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, and retinal vein occlusion. It can also be caused by trauma or surgery to the eye.

Symptoms of CME can include:

* Blurred vision

* Decreased visual acuity

* Difficulty reading

* Difficulty seeing fine details

* Distorted vision

* Dark spots or floaters in the vision

CME is diagnosed with an eye exam and a variety of tests, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluorescein angiography, and visual acuity testing.

Treatment for CME depends on the underlying cause and may include:

* Anti-inflammatory medications

* Corticosteroids

* Laser surgery

* Vitrectomy

CME can be a serious condition, but it can often be managed with treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment can help to prevent permanent vision loss.
