How should an oropharyngeal airway be inserted in adult patient?

To properly insert an oropharyngeal airway in an adult patient, follow these steps:

Preparation:

1. Ensure the patient is in a supine position with the neck in a neutral position.

2. Gather the necessary equipment, including the appropriate-sized oropharyngeal airway (typically size 3-4 for females and 4-5 for males) and a pair of gloves.

Insertion:

1. Place gloves on your hands to protect yourself and the patient.

2. Measure the length of the oropharyngeal airway by holding it alongside the patient's face, aligning the tip with the angle of the mandible and the flange with the nostril.

3. Gently insert the airway with the tip facing upward, following the natural curvature of the tongue and pharynx.

4. If the airway encounters any resistance, do not force it. Adjust the angle or consider trying a different-sized airway.

5. Once the airway is fully inserted, check for proper placement. The flange of the airway should rest against the patient's lips, and the tip should be just above the epiglottis.

6. Secure the airway in place with adhesive tape or a commercial fixation device to prevent displacement.

Removal:

1. To remove the oropharyngeal airway, hold the flange of the airway with one hand and gently withdraw it from the mouth while supporting the patient's chin with the other hand.

2. Discard the airway after a single use.

Remember to follow universal precautions and maintain aseptic technique throughout the procedure to prevent the risk of infection.
