Why do some people vomit blood after surgery?

There are several possible reasons why a person might vomit blood after surgery:

1. Gastrointestinal bleeding: This can occur due to accidental damage to the stomach, intestines, or oesophagus during surgery.

2. Blood swallowed during surgery: During surgery, blood may accumulate in the person's mouth and throat. They may inadvertently swallow this blood, leading to vomiting of blood afterwards.

3. Nausea and vomiting: Post-operative nausea and vomiting is a common side effect of anaesthesia. In some cases, the force of vomiting can cause small tears in the oesophagus, leading to blood in the vomit.

4. Pre-existing conditions: Some individuals may have underlying conditions that increase their risk of bleeding, such as ulcers, gastritis, or certain medications. These conditions may worsen after surgery, leading to vomiting of blood.

5. Bleeding disorders: People with certain bleeding disorders, such as haemophilia or thrombocytopenia, may experience excessive bleeding after surgery and may vomit blood as a result.

6. Post-operative complications: Certain surgical complications, such as a leak from the surgical site or a blood clot in the abdomen (mesenteric ischaemia), can also cause vomiting of blood.
