How long is recovery after volvulus surgery?
Immediately after surgery:
- You will be closely monitored in the hospital for a few days after surgery to manage pain, prevent complications, and ensure proper healing.
- You may experience pain, swelling, and discomfort around the surgical site.
- You will likely receive pain medication to manage discomfort.
- You may have a nasogastric (NG) tube inserted through the nose into the stomach to help drain stomach contents and prevent nausea and vomiting.
- You will be started on a clear liquid diet and gradually progress to a soft diet as tolerated.
First week after surgery:
- You may be discharged from the hospital within a few days after surgery once your condition is stable and you are able to tolerate a regular diet.
- You should continue to rest and avoid strenuous activities.
- You will need to keep the surgical wound clean and dry and follow your doctor's instructions for wound care.
- You may experience fatigue, weakness, and changes in bowel movements as your body heals.
Weeks 2-4 after surgery:
- You should be able to gradually increase your activity levels and return to light work or daily activities as tolerated.
- You may still experience some discomfort and swelling around the surgical site, but it should gradually improve.
- You will likely have follow-up appointments with your doctor to monitor your progress and healing.
Months 5-6 after surgery:
- Most people make a full recovery and are able to resume their normal activities within 5-6 months after surgery.
- You should continue to follow your doctor's instructions and attend any recommended follow-up appointments.
It's important to follow your doctor's instructions and attend all follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth recovery. If you experience any new or worsening symptoms or have any concerns, be sure to contact your doctor promptly.
