What Is a Cholecystostomy?

Cholecystostomy is a surgical procedure that involves the creation of an opening (stoma) in the gallbladder to drain bile. This is done by inserting a drainage tube into the gallbladder through the abdominal wall. The procedure is typically performed to relieve symptoms of gallbladder disease such as pain, inflammation, and/or infection. Cholecystostomy can be done as a temporary or permanent solution, depending on the individual case.
