Can trauma cause carpal tunnel syndrome?
While trauma can increase the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome, it is not a direct cause. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve, which runs through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Trauma can damage the structures in the wrist and increase pressure on the median nerve, leading to symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome such as pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and wrist. However, other factors such as repetitive hand and wrist movements, certain medical conditions, and genetics also contribute to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome.
