Skateboarding is a relatively safe activity, but there is a risk of injury, including spinal cord damage. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, there were an estimated 1,700 new cases of spinal cord injuries in the United States in 2019. Skateboarding was the fourth leading cause of spinal cord injuries, accounting for 10.5% of all cases. Of the 1,700 new cases of spinal cord injuries, 178 were caused by skateboarding.
