What can be detected with a sigmoidoscope?
A sigmoidoscope is a medical instrument used to examine the rectum and lower part of the colon (large intestine). It is inserted into the anus and gently moved upwards to allow the doctor or healthcare professional to look at the inside of these areas.
A sigmoidoscope can be used to detect various abnormalities, including:
- Inflammatory conditions, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
- Bleeding and hemorrhoids.
- Diverticulitis (small pouches that form in the colon).
- Polyps (growths that can be cancerous or non-cancerous).
- Cancer of the rectum or sigmoid colon.
- Structural abnormalities.
A sigmoidoscopy can also be used to perform certain procedures, such as:
- Removing polyps.
- Stopping bleeding.
- Dilating (widening) a narrowed section of the colon.
- Biopsies (taking a small tissue sample for examination under a microscope).
Sigmoidoscopy is a valuable tool for diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the rectum and sigmoid colon.
