How to Recover From a Fractional CO2 Laser

Fractional laser resurfacing removes age- and sun-damaged skin, leaving behind younger, smoother skin. Fractional CO2 lasers reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve the complexion. The laser process is relatively pain-free, thanks to local anesthesia and sedation, which helps you relax through the procedure, but the healing process can be surprisingly long. It is important to treat your skin gently for some time after the procedure because the skin can remain sensitive for up to a year.

Ask your doctor about silicone dressings. Not all physicians use these; however, they may reduce pain and skin crusting after the procedure.

    • 2

Arrange to have help in the 24 hours immediately following your procedure. The sedation may leave you feeling clumsy or groggy. You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure, and you may need help around the house.

    • 3

Use over-the-counter pain medication to relieve itching, burning and pain following the procedure. Ask your doctor whether these are permissible, and follow your doctor's instructions or the medication's directions for dosage amounts.

    • 4

Apply gentle moisturizers, such as petroleum jelly, as directed by your physician for 10 days following the procedure. During this time, your skin will be easily irritated, so it is important to use moisturizers that will not further irritate the skin.

Avoid the sun for up to 12 months after the procedure. Use sunscreen when outside to prevent patches of discoloration from developing. For extra protection, wear wide-brimmed hats when outside to shade your face.
