Excision Tattoo Removal

Excision is a method of surgical tattoo removal best suited for small tattoos, but can also be used for larger tattoos if it is done in steps. Excision tattoo removal will leave a scar.
  1. Who Can Perform Excision Tattoo Removal

    • Excision tattoo removal must be performed by a licensed surgeon because the procedure involves completely removing the tattooed skin and then stitching up the area. Having a surgeon perform the excision minimizes the risk of infection or other complications.

    Excision Procedure

    • After injecting a local anesthetic to numb the area, the surgeon removes the dermis and epidermis of the tattooed area. After removal of smaller tattoos, the edges of the surrounding skin are drawn together and sutured. After removal of larger tattoos, skin grafts are used to replace the removed area. Bleeding is minimal and controlled with cauterization.

    Considerations

    • Excision tattoo removal is a permanent procedure that cannot be reversed. Make sure you want the tattoo removed before undergoing an excision. The injection of the anesthesia might be painful, depending on the location and some soreness will result from the excision procedure.
