What damage can sunlight cause an area affected by scar revision surgery?
Scar tissue is extremely sensitive to sunlight and can darken or become red/purple when exposed. This condition is called hyperpigmentation and/or erythema. Additionally, the sun can cause the new tissue to thicken and become rigid. This can lead to a range of unpleasant symptoms, including:
- Pain and itching
- Difficulty moving the affected area
- A feeling of tightness or constriction
- Swelling
- Bleeding
In severe cases, sunlight exposure can even cause the scar to break down and ulcerate. This is a serious condition that can require extensive medical treatment.
