Where is a subcutaneous injection SC injected?
The subcutaneous layer, also known as the hypodermis, is situated between the skin and the muscles. It is composed of fat cells and connective tissue. Due to its location, a subcutaneous injection is administered between the skin and the muscle. Subcutaneous injections are commonly given in areas where the skin is loose and has minimal hair. Typical sites for SC injection include:
1. Abdomen (around the navel area)
2. Thighs (anterior or lateral aspects)
3. Upper arm (posterior or lateral aspects)
4. Buttocks (upper outer quadrant)
5. Scapular region (between the shoulder blades)
These areas provide better absorption and reduce the risk of hitting a muscle or blood vessel. The SC tissue in these areas is looser, allowing for easier diffusion of the injected medication.
