What to Expect After a Hair Transplant

There are stages to recovery and success following hair transplant surgery. There are side effects, and hair growth takes time. Here's what to expect in the weeks and months after your hair transplant.
  1. Early Side Effects of Surgery

    • The patient should expect to be sore, feel tightness, feel numb, and notice redness or swelling after surgery. These symptoms start to fade as early as day two or day three.

    Healing after Week 1

    • The patient should no longer feel sore after the first week. In most instances, redness and swelling are gone. In rare cases, there may be lasting numbness. The doctor will remove either the first group of staples or sutures.

    Week 2 Following Surgery

    • The doctor will remove the staples, or the sutures will dissolve. There should be no numbness at this stage. The grafts are now completely situated.

    Hair Appearance

    • In the beginning (around week one or two), the recipient will notice a slight appearance of hair. By the end of the first month, the transplant will disappear. By the end of month five, the new hair appears.

    Final Results

    • The results materialize by the end of the first year. The doctor will determine if a second treatment is necessary.
