How to Recover From Cosmetic Surgery

Recovery from cosmetic surgery depends on many factors, including how extensive the surgery was, the area treated and the type of technology used. The age and overall health of the patient prior to the surgery are also considerations to keep in mind. As a rule, a young person in good physical health will have an easier time getting back to normal than somebody who is out of shape or has some underlying health issues.

  1. Steps to Recover From Cosmetic Surgery

    • 1

Talk to your doctor about what to expect after surgery. Make sure you understand the degree of pain and discomfort you will be in and your options for dealing with it.

    • 2

Give your body enough time to recover. Try to schedule your surgery near the weekend so you have more time to rest. You also may want to take vacation time off of work to recover.

    • 3

Ask about the timing to return to daily activities, from showering to going back to work. Some types of cosmetic surgeries only require a couple of days' rest, while others will require that you take significant time off from any heavy-duty activities.

    • 4

Stay in bed or relaxing at home as much as possible to recover quicker. Do not exercise or perform any type of heavy physical work until your doctor approves it.

    • 5

Avoid driving if you are taking any kind of medication that may produce drowsiness or affect your coordination.

    • 6

Stock up on groceries, water, and other household essentials so you don't have to leave the house for the first couple of days after the surgery.

    • 7

Ask somebody to stay with you for the first 2 or 3 days that you are back home. This is especially important if you live alone and had major surgery that results in serious pain.
