Telltale Signs of a Facelift
With a bad facelift, it is easy for people to tell that work has been done. The better the job, the more natural the facelift will look. According to Dr. Grant Stevens, from an article in CosmeticSurgery.com, with good facelifts, people will not be able to tell at all. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert W. Kessler notes that with modern advancements and new insights into the aging process, there is no reason for obvious facelift signs to exist anymore. However, they still do.-
Hair Loss
-
When a surgeon cannot create fine enough scars, he will try to hide the scarring in the hairline in front of and around the ear. This can permanently remove the hair in that area, creating an unnatural appearance and will age the face. This can also happen to the hair behind the ear, which prevents women from ever wearing their hair up again. The only solution to this problem is hair transplants.
Scarring
-
Facelift incisions must be placed in just the right spot or else the scarring will be visible from across the room, according to Dr. Kessler. He explains that cheek skin is a different color than ear skin. If the incision is at the front of the ear or at the sideburn area, white, visible scars will form. In addition, if the wound does not heal properly, scars will become wide. People with darker skin tones have a tendency to get keloid scars, scars that are raised and have extra tissue. These scars can also develop from bad surgical technique. The most common places to see a keloid scar are immediately in front of the ear and behind the ear below the hair.
Tightness
-
This is the classic telltale sign where it looks as though the skin is stretched too tight, almost as if the person is in a wind tunnel, as Dr. Kessler describes it. The skin does eventually relax; however, semicircular lines will form across the cheek, which never happens naturally. Surgeons have come to know that simply tightening the skin is not effective. Deeper tissues must be addressed as well.
“Pixie” or “Devil” Ear Lobe
-
This is the look where the ear lobe is attached to the cheek, leaving no separation between the lobe and the cheek as what naturally occurs.
Neck Problems
-
When the neck procedure goes wrong, a depression forms immediately below the chin, showing fullness on each side. This produces an unnatural look.
