Post-Op Instructions for a Face Lift
A face lift, also called a rhytidectomy, is an elective surgical cosmetic procedure. The purpose of a face lift is to smooth wrinkles by tightening loose skin, fat and muscles on the face and neck. During the operation, the plastic surgeon removes excess fat and skin by making incisions to separate the skin from the underlying tissue. After the operation, there is very little you need to do other than rest and keep the face and dressings clean and dry.-
Dressings
-
On average, your skin and muscles take about two weeks to heal after a face lift. To reduce swelling and bruising, the surgeon will bandage your head and face. A drainage tube may be inserted to prevent blood and fluid from collecting under your skin. This tube is typically placed behind your ear. During recovery, all incisions and dressings should be kept dry.
Healing
-
In the weeks following a face lift, most patients experience discomfort, including bruising and numbness in some areas. Pain associated with this procedure is normally mild to moderate. Some patients complain of pain in the ears. Doctors will prescribe medication to treat the pain. After about one week, most patients have little to no discomfort. At that time, any bruising will begin to fade.
Activity
-
Following a face lift, surgeons discourage activities more strenuous than walking and mild stretching. Vigorous exercise, housework and sexual activity should be avoided for at least two weeks. Most doctors recommend that patients refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages. Face-lift patients should also avoid saunas and steam rooms.
