Can you have a sigmoidoscopy with period?
While it is possible to have a sigmoidoscopy during your period, it may not be the most comfortable or convenient time. The procedure involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end into the rectum and lower colon. This can cause some discomfort, and the presence of menstrual blood can make it more difficult for the doctor to see the inside of the colon clearly.
If you are scheduled to have a sigmoidoscopy during your period, you may want to talk to your doctor about rescheduling it for a time when you are not menstruating. However, if this is not possible, there are a few things you can do to make the procedure more comfortable.
* Take an over-the-counter pain reliever before the procedure to help reduce discomfort.
* Bring a pad or tampon with you to the procedure so that you can change it before and after the procedure.
* Ask the doctor to use a lubricant during the procedure to help reduce discomfort.
* Relax and breathe deeply during the procedure to help ease discomfort.
If you have any concerns about having a sigmoidoscopy during your period, be sure to talk to your doctor.
