Gynecological Surgical Instruments
Many of the instruments used in gynecological surgery are also used in abdominal surgery. However, there are more specialized tools that are needed for specific gynecological purposes during certain procedures.-
Knives
-
The traditional surgical scalpel is adequate for most gynecological procedures. It is available in a variety of sizes and shapes and disposable blades can be attached to the scalpel using a needle holder.
Biopsy Punch
-
A Biopsy Punch, usually disposable, is used for removing a disk of tissue. It has sharp edges and it is also a common dermatology tool.
IV Cannulas
-
IV Cannulas are a kind of catheter that can be inserted into a patient's vein to administer anesthesia, medicine or other solutions for drug therapy. These instruments prevent the needle from becoming dislodged and minimize exposure to patient tampering.
Catheter
-
A catheter is a flexible tube inserted into the body to either add or drain fluid usually from the bladder.
Colposcope
-
A colposcope is a large electric microscope that is positioned and directed toward the vagina and used to view the cervix.
Dressing Forceps
-
Dressing forceps are slender forceps used for gripping gauze or sutures, removing dressing and removing small fragments of foreign bodies in dressing wounds.
Endocervical Curettes
-
Shaped like a scoop or spoon, these devices are used to remove growths or tissue from a body cavity.
Forceps
-
Forceps have two pincers and a handle and are used for compressing, handling and grasping. In gynecological surgery, there are three types of forceps: grasping; tissue; and obstetrical forceps.
Laparotomy Ring

A Laparotomy Ring is used for female sterilization. The device is a silicone rubberband that is fitted around the fallopian tube.
