What is an adenoidectomy?

Adenoidectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of adenoids located at the back of the nasal cavity and behind the roof of the mouth (soft palate).

Adenoids are a type of lymphoid tissue, similar to tonsils. However, their main function occurs primarily during childhood and gradually diminishes with age. In certain individuals, adenoids can become enlarged or obstructed, causing breathing difficulties, recurrent infections, sleep disturbances, or related health issues. In such cases, an adenoidectomy may be recommended.

This procedure is performed as an outpatient surgery and usually requires general anesthesia. It is considered a relatively straightforward procedure for skilled ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists or otolaryngologists. Once the adenoids are removed, patients often experience relief from chronic nasal congestion, reduced snoring, verbeterde slaap, fewer throat infections, improved overall health and well-being.

An adenoidectomy may potentially be performed simultaneously with a tonsillectomy (removal of tonsils), known as an adenotonsillectomy. It depends on the patient's condition and medical professional's recommendation.
