Why is a cystectomy performed?
A cystectomy is a surgical procedure to completely remove the bladder. This operation is usually performed when the bladder is damaged beyond repair, such as due to cancer or other illnesses, and when other treatments have failed. In these cases, a cystectomy may be necessary to remove all of the cancerous tissue and prevent the cancer from spreading. Additionally, a cystectomy may be performed in cases of severe incontinence (loss of bladder control) that cannot be managed by other methods.
