About Radical Hysterectomies

Vaginal discharge stained with blood can also occur but only for a few days. Other factors also affect a patient's psychological health during the recovery period that could take months or even a year. There are occasional feelings of loss when a woman no longer sees herself capable of pregnancy or childbirth. Sexual activity also comes to mind after radical hysterectomies. The effects may vary from one patient to another. Doctors usually suggest having intercourse after six weeks of recovery. Some normally feel reluctant or unprepared which can be remedied through professional counseling. Patients are also advised to resume other physical activities like driving and exercise after six weeks.

Benefits

• The procedure is needed primarily to alleviate heavy pain suffered from abnormalities in the cervix and uterus. Patients resume to their normal lives without the pain after full recovery. It is also an extreme form of contraception, thus reproduction is no longer expected when the important organs needed for pregnancy are removed. Having a radical hysterectomy can also be a precursor to more life-threatening concerns when cancer is involved. Once the cancer is eradicated, doctors will assess if chemotherapy or radiotherapy is needed.

Considerations

• Although generally safe as a common procedure, radical hysterectomies pose considerable risks. Complications come in the form of blood clots, harsh reaction to anesthesia, infection or bleeding. Cases of weight gain, hormonal imbalance and loss of sexual drive have been reported. If the ovaries are removed, estrogen replacement therapy can be done to prevent heart disease and osteoporosis.
