What is a Hyperextended Knee?

A hyperextended knee is an abnormal outward bending of the knee joint beyond its normal range of motion. The knee should typically flex and extend between 0 and 135 degrees. While mild instances of knee hyperextension are common and not typically a cause for concern, significant hyperflexion can often damage or weaken the surrounding ligaments and structures of the knee, leading to instability, pain, and discomfort. Severe knee hyperextension may, in some instances, even result in dislocation or subluxation, which can cause acute pain and require medical intervention.
