Arthoscopic Knee Surgery Recovery
-
Rest
-
It is extremely important that you allow your knee to rest for several days after the surgery. Your doctor may recommend using crutches, a walker or a cane when walking to relieve stress on the knee joint.
Swelling
-
To manage swelling of the knee after your arthroscopic knee surgery, keep it elevated for several days after the surgery. You will also need to ice your knee regularly, as this will relieve pain and control the swelling. Ice should be applied at least three times a day, for 20 minutes each time.
Incision Care
-
To care for your arthroscopic knee surgery incision, keep the area clean and dry at all times. A nurse will explain the proper way to change your dressings, if necessary.
Medications
-
Your doctor will likely prescribe a variety of medications after your knee surgery. Commonly, you will be asked to take a pain medication to relieve your pain, an antibiotic to prevent infection and an anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling. It is important to follow the exact directions of each medication prescribed.
Physical Therapy
-
Your surgeon will determine when you should start a physical therapy program. These therapy sessions involve various exercises that will help you regain strength and flexibility in your knee and leg.
