Lap Bands & PMS
Women who have undergone Lap-Band surgery may experience more severe PMS symptoms than they did prior to surgery, such as bloating and cramping. Many women complain of tightness during PMS and are unable to eat anything other than liquids or very soft foods.-
Water Retention
-
Bloating or water retention is often seen in the swelling of the hands and feet. This swelling is an outward manifestation of water retention that occurs throughout the entire body, including internal organs, which is why your band may feel tight.
Causes
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, the reasons for water retention are unclear, but the hormonal changes that occur during PMS may be involved.
Relief
-
Staying active and limiting the amount of salt in your diet can help relieve bloating. Watch out for hidden sources of sodium, such as canned soups or vegetables.
Water Pills
-
Some Lap-Band patients find that water pills, or diuretics, help relieve the swelling experienced during PMS. Diuretics help expel sodium and excess water from the body.
Risks
-
Talk to your doctor before taking water pills. Many contain caffeine, which some Lap-Band patients should avoid. They may also decrease potassium levels, so be sure to compensate with foods such as bananas and spinach.
