How to Stop Esophageal Spasms After Lap Band Surgery

After Lap-Band surgery, some people experience esophageal spasms. These spasms happen when there is a disruption in the contractions that allow the esophagus to move food through to the stomach. Doctors do not know what exactly causes esophageal spasms or why some people develop them after Lap-Band surgery. However, they suspect that these spasms are caused by other issues. Conditions like GERD, anxiety, depression and sensitivity to food are all thought to be causes of esophageal spasms. While there is no cure for esophageal spasms, they can be calmed by treating the issues thought to cause them.

Instructions

  1. Treating Esophageal Spasms

    • 1

Take an antacid. It doesn't matter if it is a liquid or solid. Follow the product instructions. The medicine in the antacid will help reduce the acid in the stomach and start to slow esophageal spasms.

    • 2

Avoid extremely hot or cold foods. Doctors suspect that eating extremely hot or cold foods can contribute to esophageal spasms. The extreme changes in temperature may disrupt the contractions that move food through the esophagus and into the stomach.

    • 3

Make an appointment to meet with your doctor. A doctor will be able to diagnose the underlying cause of your esophageal spasms and prescribe medication accordingly. These can include antacids, nitrates and calcium to help relax the muscles, or mild antidepressants.
