Who performs a colposcopy?
Colposcopy is a procedure performed by a healthcare provider called a gynecologist. A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in women's reproductive health. During a colposcopy, the gynecologist uses a special instrument called a colposcope to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for abnormalities. The procedure is often performed as part of a routine pelvic exam or to investigate abnormal results from a Pap test. The gynecologist will insert the colposcope into the vagina and use a bright light and magnification to get a detailed view of the tissues. If any suspicious areas are found, a biopsy may be performed, where a small sample of tissue is taken for further examination under a microscope.
