Negatives of Lasik
LASIK, or laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is a procedure in which a laser is used to re-shape the cornea to correct vision problems, according to the Mayo Clinic. LASIK can correct farsightedness (hyperopia), nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism. LASIK helps many see clearly without the use of glasses or contacts. The surgery does carry some risk of damage to the eye, and some people with certain medical conditions should not have laser eye surgery.-
Not Everyone is Eligible
-
Many people with certain health or vision conditions are not eligible for the LASIK procedure. People with diseases affecting the immune system, such as rheumatoid arthritis and HIV, cannot undergo LASIK surgery because they may not be able to heal from the procedure, according to the Mayo Clinic. Cornea shape may prohibit the procedure. Similarly, people suffering from chronic dry eyes should not have LASIK surgery.
Cost
-
The LASIK procedure is a costly procedure, and your health insurance may not cover the cost. You may find that wearing glasses or contacts is a cheaper alternative. People who have generally good vision and only wear glasses occasionally may not find that the benefits are not worth the risk. Likewise, those who are very nearsighted may find that they still need glasses or contacts after the procedure and may choose to avoid the cost, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Risks
-
There are some risks involved in the LASIK procedure, as with any form of surgery. Results can be imprecise, and vision problems may be over-corrected or under-corrected, and require additional procedures, according to Mayo Clinic. LASIK can also cause astigmatism. If you have presbyopia, or difficulty seeing objects up close, LASIK may worsen your condition. LASIK surgery can cause double vision, as well as glare and star-bursts when looking at bright lights, according to Mayo Clinic. These problems may require additional surgery to repair. Mayo Clinic also warns that the surgery can cause eye dryness and can lead to infection, swelling and other conditions.
