What is the definition of an eye lift?
Eyelift, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. The surgery can be performed to remove excess skin, muscle and fat from the eyelids, and to tighten the underlying muscles and skin. Eyelid surgery can be done for cosmetic or medical reasons.
Common cosmetic concerns that can be addressed with eyelid surgery include:
- Excess skin on the upper or lower eyelids
- Bags or puffiness under the eyes
- Drooping or sagging eyelids
- Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes
Medical conditions that can be improved with eyelid surgery include:
- Difficulty seeing caused by drooping eyelids (blepharoptosis)
- Eyelashes that turn inward or outward (trichiasis or ectropion)
- Entropion, a condition in which the eyelid turns inward and the lashes rub against the eye
Eyelid surgery is typically performed on people over the age of 35, but can also be performed on younger people with certain medical conditions. The surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis, and recovery time is typically 1-2 weeks.
