How many types of colostomy are there?

There are two main types of colostomy:

1. Temporary Colostomy: A temporary colostomy is a temporary surgical opening created in the colon to divert the flow of stool from the affected area of the colon or rectum. This type of colostomy is usually performed when there is a temporary need to rest and allow the affected area to heal, such as after surgery to remove a diseased portion of the colon or rectum. The temporary colostomy is typically closed once the affected area has healed sufficiently, and the normal digestive function can be restored.

2. Permanent Colostomy: A permanent colostomy is a permanent surgical opening created in the colon to divert the flow of stool away from the affected area of the colon or rectum. This type of colostomy is usually performed when it is necessary to permanently remove a diseased portion of the colon or rectum, such as in cases of cancer or severe rectal prolapse. In a permanent colostomy, the end of the colon is brought out through the abdominal wall, and a stoma (opening) is created through which the stool is excreted into a collection bag.
