What is involved in a simple mastecomy?
Simple mastectomy
During a simple mastectomy, which some consider to be the least complex type of mastectomy, the surgeon removes only the breast. If your chest muscles and lymph nodes are cancer free, they will not be removed during this procedure.
Incision
In this type of mastectomy, the incision follows the curve of the breast. This allows for optimal placement of a prosthesis should you decide to have a breast reconstruction.
How the nipple is handled
The nipple must be removed prior to the mastectomy. If you choose to have your nipple removed before mastectomy, it’s typically removed after the mastectomy.
Reconstruction
There are several different types of reconstruction options available. This decision will ideally be made prior to the mastectomy. Your surgeon will discuss these with you before your procedure.
Scarring
The scar typically extends in a curve around the breast. This ensures the best healing and minimal scar visibility if breast reconstruction is performed at a later date.
