What is the purpose of capsule endoscopy?
Capsule endoscopy is a medical imaging procedure that uses a small, ingestible camera to take pictures of the gastrointestinal tract. The swallowed capsule transmits radio signals or takes pictures as it moves through the digestive system. The images can then be viewed on a monitor by a physician.
Capsule endoscopy is typically used to examine the small intestine, which is difficult to reach with traditional endoscopes. It can be used to diagnose conditions such as:
- Ulcers
- Bleeding
- Crohn's disease
- Celiac disease
- Tumors
Capsule endoscopy can also be used to screen for colon cancer.
