What are the tendons which permit heart valve to open and close?
Tendon is a term that refers to a connective tissue that connects muscles to bones. There are no tendons permitting the heart valve to open and close. The heart valves are opened and closed by the pressure difference between the chambers of the heart. The valves are made up of heart valve leaflets that are connected by chordae tendineae, which are thin, fibrous cords. The chordae tendineae are connected to the papillary muscles, which are small muscles located in the ventricles of the heart. When the heart contracts, the papillary muscles pull on the chordae tendineae, which in turn cause the heart leaflets to close and prevent the backflow of blood.
