Alternatives for Crutches

Crutches are a type of walking and mobility aid for those who have sufferered an injury to their legs or feet. Although crutches are useful in improving walking ability, they can also be uncomfortable to use as they require a lot of upper body and arm strength. There are other alternatives to crutches.
  1. Knee Walker

    • Knee walkers are designed to help those with injuries below the knee. They run on three or four wheels with a cushioned "knee rest" and handle bars resembling a tall tricycle. The knee walker essentially acts as a leg while you bend and rest your knee on the "knee rest" and hold onto the handle bars for support.

    Walking Stick

    • A walking stick is only appropriate for those with very minor leg injuries. You must be able to apply some pressure to the injured leg or foot. The walking stick is there for extra walking support. A walking stick can also be used for those with back injuries.

    Wheelchair

    • Wheelchairs can be used manually or electronically. They have four wheels and a seat. They are for those who have especially serious injuries or for those who cannot use both legs. Wheelchairs limit accessibility though as they are bulky.

    Hands-free Crutch

    • This is an alternative to the traditional crutch where you need your arms and hands to mobilize you. The hands-free crutch is designed for those with injuries on one leg or foot. They consist of a single pole with various straps that are meant to fasten around your leg. As the wearer, you will need to bend your knee and rest it on the cushion. The hands-free crutch has a rubber tread that takes the weight of your leg instead of your foot.
