Dermabond Alternatives
Dermabond is a medical adhesive also called skin glue. It is a product used as an alternative to stitches in wounds, developed by Ethicon, a company that is part of Johnson & Johnson. The chemical compound 2-octyl cyanoacrylate is the main component in Dermabond and other skin glues, such as SurgiSeal. However, some medical adhesives such as LiquiBand and Histoacryl contain n-butyl-2 cyanoacrylate. Skin glues are often used for cuts or wounds that are up to two inches long and have straight edges that can be pulled together, according to NHS Choices.-
SurgiSeal
-
SurgiSeal, a skin adhesive developed by Adhezion Biomedical, provides a flexible, water-resistant, antimicrobial protective covering, and like other similar products eliminates the need for stitches in some wounds. According to the manufacturers, the product offers optimal permeability, increasing oxygen transmission to the healing wound. The company also claims that SurgiSeal protects patients by preventing bacteria and water from reaching the wound, which allows patients to shower immediately after surgery.
LiquiBand
-
LiquiBand is produced by Advanced Medical Solutions Group in England. The product comes in different versions, including LiquiBand Flow Control, which has the benefit of a safety applicator; LiquiBand Optima, ideal for use on younger patients because of its "no-sting" formula and very fast drying time of up to 10 seconds; and LiquiBand Surgical, designed for surgical wounds.
Histoacryl
-
Histoacryl is the oldest of all skin adhesives, having been developed in the late 1960s by B. Braun Laboratories. Like other skin adhesives, Histoacryl must not be applied to wounds in areas of high skin tension, such as the elbows, knees or knuckles, or to the surface of the eye, reports the company's website.
