Laser Hair Removal Certification Requirements
As the popularity of laser hair removal grows, the need for certified laser hair technicians grows as well. While states regulations vary in what they require for a licensed and certified laser hair technician, some consistent standards exist across the nation.-
Certification
-
Professional certification from a school or licensed agency is required in most states in order to perform laser hair removal. Choose a state accredited program when picking the school that you want to attend. Most programs are approximately 40 hours of coursework. If you don't attend a state-approved program, it will affect your reputability once you begin to perform laser hair removal.
Nursing Degree
-
Not all states allow just certified technicians to perform laser hair removal. States such as Alabama and Connecticut require that you are a licensed nurse or nurse practitioner to perform hair removal. Arizona and Alaska, among other states, require that doctors supervise technicians. A few states, such as Delaware and Hawaii, will only allow doctors to perform the procedure. Even in states where certified technicians are allowed to perform laser hair removal, doctors choose not to hire anyone without a nursing degree and some experience in the field.
Training Hours
-
Coursework may include basic laser safety, laser techniques, post treatment, and biology of skin and hair. Coursework may also include information about legal issues. Many doctors who hire laser technicians prefer that you have other qualifying coursework as well, or a background that suits laser hair removal, such as cosmetology, nursing or another aesthetics background.
