1
Visit your doctor to discuss the transition from crutches to a boot. He will remove the cast and fit you with a boot. The boot is made from hard plastic that supports the ankle during rehabilitation, and should fit snugly to protect the injured area.

2
Apply the boot and wear it while using the crutches. Slide the boot gently over the ankle and tighten the straps until they hold the leg firmly, but not so tight as to cut into the skin. During the first two weeks, continue to use the crutches as you move around to prevent adding too much weight on the injury after cast removal.

3
Walk with a cane during the next two weeks to slowly reintroduce weight to the affected limb. Start using the cane on short trips while in the house, such as to the kitchen or restroom. Hold the cane in the opposite hand from the injured leg, to shift the majority of the weight off the boot. This allows the leg to build muscle tissue that might have atrophied while in the cast.
-
4
Discard the cane and walk with only the boot once the injured leg can bear your weight without causing too much discomfort. Leave the boot on at all times as directed by your doctor, removing it only to shower.
